ColonBroom Health Benefits

What Is ColonBroom?

If you’ve been struggling with digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, excess gas, etc, you may have come across ColonBroom. The same goes if you’ve been searching for weight loss products or something to boost your energy levels. This product claims to have quite a few health benefits and it’s pretty popular.

As we all know, health supplements often promise the world. Some do live up to what they promise, but some are not nearly as healthy as you think and others just don’t deliver. We’re going to help you make an informed decision about whether or not Colon Broom is the product for you and whether it’s actually worth your money.

About Colonbroom

Skinnyfit

Colon Broom is a fiber supplement. Essentially it’s made from psyllium husks, but there are also other ingredients that we’ll take a look at shortly. If you do a quick search, you’ll see many people reporting that Colon Broom is owned by Max Nutrition LLC. I couldn’t find any evidence of this.

It could be that this brand got taken over by Gut Health LLC as per the label, although the ColonBroom site lists Gut Health, UAB as the company. There were no complaints to be found against the company for bad products.

On the website, you can take a quiz to determine your health needs. While this could pinpoint some issues you may have, it won’t replace a trip to the doctor.

ColonBroom Ingredients

Finding the ingredients for Colon Broom isn’t as easy as going onto their website. We found the ingredients on Amazon from the label picture. This is a bit strange as it is a supplement and the ingredients should be available on the website. But let’s carry on.

The main ingredient is psyllium husk powder of which there is 3.6g per serving.

The other ingredients don’t have amounts next to them. They are:

  • Natural flavor
  • Citric Acid
  • Crystalized Lemon (citric acid, lemon oil, lemon juice)
  • Stevia leaf extract
  • Sea salt
  • Fruit and vegetable juice (used as colorants)
  • Organic rice hulls (Nu-FLOW®)

From these ingredients, there are also small amounts of naturally occurring minerals:

  • Calcium (3mg)
  • Sodium (60mg)
  • Potassium (2mg)

ColonBroom Health Benefits

We all know that getting sufficient fiber is important. It not only ensures healthy and regular bowel movements. It also helps to keep cholesterol levels in check, lowers blood sugar levels, promotes satiety, and ensures a healthy gut microbiome. But let’s see how Colon Broom specifically can benefit your health.

Psyllium Husks

Psyllium husks are derived from the seeds of the Psyllium plant (Plantago ovata). It’s been used in traditional medicine (China and India) for its health benefits. Psyllium husks are made up mainly of soluble fiber.

Because of this, it helps to relieve constipation. The soluble fiber in psyllium husks form a gel and allow water into the stools making them softer and bulks them up. Studies of people with constipation who took 7g and 5g respectively, showed an improvement in bowel movement frequency and the consistency of stools. It also reduced pain while passing stools.

Psyllium husks have also been shown to improve the gut microbiome not only in constipated people, but in healthy people too. Supplementation increased the good bacterial strains and minimized the bad bacterial strains.

Supplementation with psyllium husks has been shown to lower blood glucose levels and improve insulin resistance. This same study showed an even bigger improvement in the people who made positive lifestyle changes (healthy diet and exercise) and took psyllium husks as one would expect.

In a review of various studies, Psyllium husks have been shown to lower high cholesterol levels by 2-20% (total cholesterol) and 6-24% (LDL cholesterol) depending on factors like diet and cholesterol-lowering medication.

This was at doses of 6g to 15g per day. The biggest reductions were seen in those who took psyllium husks in conjunction with medication. But decent reductions were seen in those who adopted a healthier diet too. The benefits also extended to those who made no changes to their diets.

Another review of studies found that psyllium husk supplementation in particular is beneficial for those suffering from all types of IBS. Soluble fiber such as that provided by psyllium has been shown to improve the overall symptoms in IBS sufferers, including constipation, diarrhea, and inflammation. In another study, high doses of 25g per day mixed into 500ml of water was most effective.

Supplementation with psyllium also helps to slightly lower high blood pressure. A reduction of 2,04mm/Hg was seen specifically in systolic blood pressure (the top number which is the measure of force the heart exets on the artery walls each time it pumps). The dosage to achieve this was around 10g per day.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is a substance naturally found in citrus fruits. It’s used as a flavoring and chelating (aids absorption) agent in processed foods, as well as to regulate the pH in foods. It’s even found in our bones. Citric acid increases the absorption of calcium.

Crystallized Lemon

Lemons have anti-inflammatory properties and may even have anticancer and antimicrobial (bad microbes) and antiparasitic properties. They also contain vitamins C, A, B1, B2, and B3.

When extracts are cold-pressed, many of these benefits are preserved. However, they’re rarely as good as eating a fresh lemon. Studies on the juice or oils that have been extracted have mainly been done in petri dishes and on mice.

Weight loss from lemon extract has been proven in mice, but not yet in humans, unfortunately. It’s thought that if lemons were to aid weight loss in humans, it would be due to the flavanoids (a type of antioxidant) found in lemons.

Stevia Leaf Extract

Stevia leaf extract is a sweetener derived from the Stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana). A review of studies show that stevia is a safe sweetener for diabetics.

It also has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and diuretic properties. It may also lower high blood pressure and have anti-cancer properties. But research is ongoing.

Organic Rice Hulls (Nu-FLOW®)

Nu-FLOW is used to replace synthetic ingredients like anti-caking agents. Colon Broom is an all natural product.

How to Take ColonBroom

Add 1 scoop to 12-14 fl. oz (360-420 ml) of water and drink it as soon as possible, otherwise it may thicken. Colon Broom recommends doing this twice a day 30-60 minutes before meals and 2 hours after medication. It’s also recommended to drink an additional glass of water after each serving.

Dosage

One serving is around 5.7g of the powder of which psyllium husk powder makes up 3.6g.

ColonBroom Product Reviews 2023: What Do Customers Think?

These reviews are off Amazon which we feel may be more trustworthy than on Colon Broom’s site. All these reviews are from verified purchasers.

Arielle says:

“The taste is okay and the product works for a cleanse and if you ever feel bloated. Promotes good gut health and boosts weight loss. I do not take the product religiously but when I want to do a cleanse or if I’ve been feeling bloated it’s my go to.”

Mary Turcotte says:

“I have sibo and ibs, and needed a third form of fiber, I tried everything my stomach would always be in pain even with a prescription. Until I tried this. This actually helped me so much with my other meds it does take a few days to kick in but I’m glad I found this.”

Elisabeth Whittaker says:

“I bought this to help with my IBS as well as weight loss. This might be TMI but I’m a 2-3 time a week pooper. With Colonbroom I was regularly going almost everyday. I haven’t noticed any weight loss in the 2 months I drank this. For the price I can try something else for my IBS. Won’t be buying again.”

Kelly says:

“I was excited to try this after seeing all the hype on social media sadly I wasn’t impressed with this product it didn’t work great and it’s overpriced in my opinion. There’s a lot of other products that do the same that won’t cost $69. The taste is ok all in all nothing special.”

Pros / Cons

Pros:

  • Colon Broom is sugar-free and so is safe for diabetics.
  • Colon Broom is low in sodium (less than 3% DV per serving) and so is likely safe for those with high blood pressure. In fact, psyllium supplementation reduces hypertension.
  • Psyllium husk powder, the main ingredient, has been scientifically proven to relieve constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and other symptoms of IBS, increase good gut bacteria, improve cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and reduce insulin resistance.
  • Colon Broom is sweetened with stevia, which may lower inflammation.
  • Some ingredients, such as the crystallized lemon, may have small amounts of vitamins which haven’t been indicated on the label, and some have small amounts of calcium and potassium.
  • ColonBroom is vegan, GMO-free, and formulated FDA and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)-registered facility.

Cons:

  • There is no scientific evidence that backs Colon Broom’s weight loss claim. Studies about the gut and weight are ongoing.
  • Citric acid increases the absorption of aluminum and lead which are harmful in large amounts.
  • Manufactured citric acid may cause inflammation. Technically, manufactured citric acid is natural, it’s made from the fungus Aspergillus niger.
  • Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should speak to their doctor before trying this as stevia may have anti-fertility properties.
  • Two servings per day (7.2g of psyllium powder) may not get you all the health benefits as many studies showed health benefits of servings of at least 10g and above per day. But it depends on your needs.
  • Colon Broom is expensive.

Side Effects

Any time you increase your fiber intake suddenly, you will experience bloating and excess gas. It’s recommended to start with one serving per day and work up to two as well as to drink enough water throughout the day.

Does It Really Work?

Colon Broom may improve your gut microbiome and can be useful for increasing your fiber intake if you aren’t getting the required 21-25g for women and 30-38g per day for men. It will also help you if you aren’t quite getting enough soluble fiber. All this can help for issues like constipation and bloating.

The problem is that the amount of psyllium husk powder in each serving is too low for benefits like relieving IBS symptoms and lowering high blood pressure. And as we’ve mentioned, this product is unlikely to help you lose weight, especially without lifestyle changes.

Is ColonBroom Worth it?

The truth is that you can find psyllium husk powder that is pure and far cheaper. It may not taste as nice, but why not put it into a smoothie. You’ll also be sure that you aren’t taking in potentially harmful additives.
